Bihar's high court in Patna demanded an audit of the figures after allegations that the local government was hiding the scale of infections and deaths. However, the death tally was the highest-ever because it included Bihar's previously uncounted 3,951 deaths.

The data by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday showed India logged 92,596 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. The latest addition of cases took the total caseload in the country to 2,90,89,069 while the death toll in the country rose up to 3,53,528 after the country reported 2,219 fatalities during the same span of time.

As more people are getting recovered from COVID-19 infection, the ministry informed that India's daily recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases for the 28th consecutive day.

"This constitutes an overall recovery rate of 94.77 per cent, which is showing a sustained increasing trend", the release stated.

That would mean no more travel restrictions within the province, and outdoor social gatherings with up to 50 people. New outbreaks have been declared at Kelowna General Hospital and Glenwood Seniors Community in Agassiz.


Bihar's health department on Wednesday said Covid-19 had killed 9,429 people in the state, almost double its previous count.

Meanwhile, India conducted 19,85,967 tests during the previous day adding up to 37.01 crore tests so far.

"While on one side testing has been enhanced across the country, a continued decline in weekly case positivity is noticed. It has remained less than 10% for 17 consecutive days now".

The weekly positivity rate now stands at 5.66%, whereas, the daily positivity rate is at 4.66%.

According to the Health Ministry, a total of 1,62,664 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total discharge to 2,75,04,126 till date. As many as 33 lakh vaccine doses were administered on Wednesday alone.

In the monthly report published by the Department of Economic Affairs, the ministry said rapid vaccination was key to reviving investment and consumption cycles in the coming fiscal quarters.

India reported on Thursday the highest single-day death toll from COVID-19 in the world, at 6,148, after Bihar revised its figures to account for people who succumbed to the disease at home or in private hospitals.
