Four members of a Muslim family were killed in a "premeditated" vehicle attack on Sunday, Canadian police say.

Deceased are a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl.

A nine-year-old boy remains in hospital in serious condition.

The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a pickup truck, Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, allegedly struck five people walking on Hyde Park Road near South Carriage Road.

He was arrested without incident at a mall about seven kilometres away from where the family was struck.

About a dozen police officers searched the crash scene on Monday as they combed the area looking for evidence.

Police would not specify why they believe the attack was hate motivated, but said they gathered evidence "from a variety of sources".

The attack was pre-planned and pre-meditated and the suspect was wearing a vest that appeared to be like body armour during the attack, police said.

Police say there was no known prior relationship between the suspect and the victims.

Zahid Khan, a family friend, said the three generations of victims comprised the grandmother, father, mother and teenage daughter.

Williams acknowledged the tragedy might stoke fear and anxiety, especially among Muslims or others targeted by hate, and tried to reassure them.

"I was shaken up thinking it was an erratic driver", Martin said.

"These were innocent human beings who were killed simply because they were Muslim", said community spokesperson Nawaz Tahir. "We will stand strong against hate We will stand strong against Islamophobia. We will respond to those trying to inflict terror on our community with love".

"It is believed that these victims were targeted because they were Muslim", Detective Superintendent Paul Waight told a news conference.

She went home and from her apartment, she could see the scene.

Martin said her vehicle shook from the force of the passing truck. "People were pointing and screaming and had their arms waving".

Hyde Park Road is closed between Sarnia and Gainsborough Roads, while South Carriage Road is closed between Prince of Wales Gate and Finley Crescent.

"I'm still in shock", said Martin visibily emotional.
