Florida joins states to ban transgender girls from sports

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who is closely aligned with former President Donald Trump, signed the bill into law after it had been rushed through the state legislature as an attachment to a charter school bill.

The new law, sure to be challenged as unconstitutional, inflames an already contentious discussion unfolding nationally as Republican-controlled states move to limit the rights of LGBTQ people, whose advocates were particularly annoyed that the legislation was signed on the first day of Gay Pride Month.

"A bad policy in my state of CT has robbed me, my teammates as well as every other female track athlete in my state of the opportunity to compete on a level playing field", Soule said. "In Florida, we are ensuring that there are legal consequences to pay for being on the wrong side of history". It will go into effect on July 1.

Florida is the seventh state to pass a bill blocking transgender females from female sports: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

The Human Rights Campaign plans to sue Florida over the law.

The bill bans transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports at educational institutions across the state.

He accused DeSantis and Florida lawmakers of "legislating based on a false, discriminatory premise that puts the safety and well-being of transgender children on the line". It says a transgender student athlete can't participate without first showing a birth certificate saying she was a girl when she was born. When a trans young person is told they cannot play the sport they love exclusively because of who they are, it can be incredibly harmful to their mental health and sense of self, and contribute to increased risk for suicide.

"This Pride Month, and every month, we must send a strong message to transgender and nonbinary youth that they should be proud of who they are and deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else". All Floridians will have to face the consequences of this anti-transgender legislation - including economic harm, expensive taxpayer-funded legal battles, and a tarnished reputation.
