Police in Maryland responded to an active shooter on Tuesday and said there are at least two victims.

After receiving the call, police found the two shooting victims, both men, at Riverside Tech Park, a suburban-style sprawling complex of two-story commercial businesses, Lando said. The gunman shot and injured two men in or near the business, then drove toward the base, which is about 10 minutes away, Lando said. He added that it was not clear yet who killed the suspect.

No further information was immediately available from police but a local ABC News reporter said that the suspect is "active duty US Navy".

The president is set to make the announcement from the White House Tuesday, after a visit to a vaccination site in Alexandria, Va. President Biden is expected to announce an April 19 deadline for all states to open eligibility to individuals ages 16 and up.


The shooting happened at an address where a concrete business is located and about 4 miles (6 kilometres) from Fort Detrick. "Not even a quarter of a mile".

The FBI's Baltimore Field Office was assisting the Maryland State Police and Frederick County Police in the investigation.

Fort Detrick is home to the military's flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs.

Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor said the base is a huge economic driver in the region, drawing scientists, military personnel and their families to the community. "And today it did".

Mark Nelson, a firefighter who lives in a row of townhomes across the street from the base, said he heard the base blast warning sirens Tuesday morning. They said he was the only shooter involved and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

"It's very tragic. It's happening too frequently".

Police had been called to the first scene, about a 4-mile drive east of Fort Detrick, around 8:20 a.m., Lando said. He said after that shooting the suspect drove about 10 minutes to Fort Detrick and was killed there.
