Greater Brisbane was forced into a three-day lockdown after a cleaner tested positive to the more contagious UK COVID-19 strain.

Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane was in its first day of a snap lockdown yesterday, with officials elsewhere on "high alert" over the emergence of more contagious strains of Covid-19.

While the blanket lockdown was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. local time on Monday, Palaszczuk said that additional restrictions would remain in place for the next 10 days to ensure the strain does not re-emerge in the community.

Two of those people had travelled to the United Kingdom, but Dr Young said it was too early to know if they had the more contagious strain of the virus.

Everyone in the Greater Brisbane region will be required to wear masks until at least 1am on January 22.

"We've found the first person which is so critical", she told reporters on Saturday morning.

Until the lockdown, Brisbane was among several Australian cities enjoying a return to relative normality due to the country's success in suppressing the virus.

Authorities also issued a warning for passengers of a flight that arrived in Brisbane from Melbourne earlier this month, after a woman tested positive for the United Kingdom strain despite already undergoing a period of isolation.

Of the woman's 147 close contacts, 112 have tested negative with the rest of the tests pending.

"I'm quite sure people are wondering about the cricket, so fingers crossed, it looks like everything will be going ahead", Palaszczuk said.

Palaszczuk thanked the state for their "great effort" in getting out and getting tested, after the state recorded over 18,000 tests.

The case forced Brisbane into a three day lockdown, during which no new cases of the virus were recorded.

"But because of this new variant, we're just being ultra-cautious".

"It's a great deal of uncertainty ahead of us and accumulating worries for the industry".

She would not comment on whether one more case of community transmission of the United Kingdom variant would put the state into lockdown again.

The Premier praised 2.38 million people living in Brisbane for the "great response" in complying with the lockdown rules and welcomed the "good news" of no further community transmission.

CCIQ Policy and Advocacy General Manager Amanda Rohan said the southeast faced a significant economic and confidence hit should the restrictions continue.

Additionally, the Premier announced a number of restrictions for businesses, such as 1 person per 4 square metres for indoor venues.

"Like most elite events past year which saw Queensland host several sporting bubbles, COVID-19 has made preparing for Friday's Test anything but routine".
