Lockdown: England to get tougher three-tiered system after national lockdown

This is yet to be announced by the government, with new rules expected to be announced this week by Boris Johnson.

The NHS is preparing to administer the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine next month, once it has been approved for use in the United Kingdom by regulators, and it will be rolled out more widely in the new year.

Johnson was to meet with his Cabinet to get their approval for the plans today, while ministers will set out on Thursday what tier each area will be placed in to when the lockdown ends.

"But the prime minister and his scientific advisers are clear the virus is still present - and without regional restrictions it could quickly run out of control again before vaccines and mass testing have had an effect".

The Covid recovery group (CRG), led by former chief whip Mark Harper and ex-Brexit minister Steve Baker, is threatening to withhold support for the Prime Minister's measures when the four-week lockdown in England expires on December 2.

Covid-19: Strengthened tier system for England after lockdown

As British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce up to a week of relaxed COVID-19 restrictions during Christmas season, a leading British statistician warned Sunday that "there will be a price to pay for relaxing rules at Christmas".

The five day period will begin on Christmas Eve and continue through to the Bank Holiday on December 28.

"With regard to Christmas, I think frustrating as it is for all of us, Christmas is not going to be normal this year, but, that said, the Prime Minister and everyone else, we're looking at ways to see how families can spend some time with each other over (the) Christmas period".

The original three-tiered regional approach was introduced on October 12 as the government tried to control a surge in COVID-19 cases without resorting to a national lockdown. The second tier barred people from meeting indoors with anyone from outside their household.

Under that system, a "medium" alert level requires restaurants and pubs to close at 10 p.m. and prohibits residents from mixing in groups larger than six.

Mr Johnson has promised a House of Commons vote on his plans to replace the lockdown with a local, tiered approach.

Meanwhile Labour urged the Government not to let England return to the "shambles" seen before the current national lockdown.

The government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) is expected to publish papers on Monday saying that measures in the previous tiers were not strong enough.

Johnson announced the lockdown in England on October 31 after public health officials warned that an exponential rise in new daily coronavirus infections was threatening to overwhelm the National Health Service as the winter flu season approached.

"We are especially concerned about outside sport, the 10pm curfew, closure of non-essential retail, gyms and personal care businesses, restrictions on worship, care home visits, hospitality and the inclusion of children under 12 in the "Rule of 6".

A No 10 spokeswoman said: "Everyone's efforts during the current national restrictions have helped bring the virus back under control, slowed its spread and eased pressures on the NHS".

People should "keep up the pressure on this virus and push down on it as much as we can right to the end of the period (of lockdown)", he said.
