Pelting is when the skin of the animal is removed after it has been euthanised by the farmers.

Earlier in November, Danish authorities ordered the cull of all minks in the country after Covid-19 outbreaks were linked to some of the 1,200 Danish mink farms.

"I regretted this earlier, I regret it again and take responsibility for this, especially I regret this to the many mink farmers who have been in a very unhappy situation", adding that "There has only been one objective: to stop the Covid-19 infection in and from mink because it poses a threat to public health".

Denmark's agriculture minister has resigned, amid backlash to the government's order to cull all of the country's mink population.

Last week it emerged that Denmark's government did not have the legislation in place for such a directive, though a deal was later reached to create a retroactive legal basis for the cull.

A mutated version of the new coronavirus detected in Danish minks that raised concerns about the effectiveness of a future vaccine has likely been eradicated, Denmark's health ministry said Thursday.

The Chief Medical Officer has written to the Department of Agriculture voicing concern that the mutation could affect the rollout of any COVID-19 vaccine.

It said this is available to view along with specific protocols for livestock farmers regarding TB testing and the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 on the dedicated COVID hub of the Department website.

It is understood that the farms will be allowed to pelt the remaining animals to fill outstanding orders.

He told a daily press briefing: 'Public servants must support their country's restrictive law and stay loyal to their homeland. She added that expanded Beijing-Hong Kong cooperation would bring new opportunities and mutual benefits.

"DAFM collected samples from mink on each of the mink farms as part of an enhanced surveillance programme for SARS-CoV-2".

He said that while the Irish Government is leaning on the recent Danish decision to cull all animals on these farms, it neglects to mention that the Danish decision was based on a rapid increase in the number of infected mink farms.

It said the advice also includes strict adherence to the HSE public health guidelines on COVID 19.

Earlier in the week Veterinary Ireland urged the closure of Irish mink fur farms and speaking in the Dail yesterday Paul Murphy echoed the call for them to be closed rapidly.
