Chinese vaccine maker Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has commenced the phase-3 clinical trials for its Covid-19 vaccine, planning to recruit 29,000 volunteers across the world.

On November 17, Moderna, in its official statement, had announced that the independent, U.S. NIH-appointed Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the Phase 3 study of mRNA-1273 has informed Moderna that the trial has met the statistical criteria pre-specified in the study protocol for efficacy, with a vaccine efficacy of 94.5%.

China has been giving experimental Covid-19 vaccines to people including state employees, worldwide students, and essential workers heading overseas since July.

"Our vaccines have been given to about one million people and we have not received any information about serious negative reactions", said Sinopharm's Chairman, Liu Jingzhen. "A total of 40,000 people will participate in this trial in 7 countries, of which 8 to 10, 000 will be Pakistani", he said.

Numerous trials are taking place overseas, as China has largely brought the virus under control within its borders. Two doses are required per person for the Pfizer, Sputnik V and Moderna vaccines. Meanwhile, five vaccines in India are in various stages of clinical trials.
