Apple Paying $113 Million to Settle U.S. iPhone Throttling Investigation

Apple to Pay Another $113 Million to State Prosecutors for 'Batterygate'

A.G. Peterson Announces $113 Million Settlement with Apple over iPhone Throttling

"Apple withheld information about their batteries that slowed down iPhone performance, all while passing it off as an update", California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement. Three class-action lawsuits were opened in the USA for this, with people accusing Apple of fraud, forcing users to buy new devices and more.

Millions of people were affected when the models of iPhone 6 and 7 and SE were slowed down in 2016 in a scandal that was dubbed batterygate.

Apple declined Business Insider's request for comment and pointed to a part of the filing that stated Apple's settlement does not imply admittance of wrongdoing.

Apple first offered $29 as battery replacement for the affected users and later agreed for a $500 million class action settlement in March this year.

Edinburgh's Riley said this suggests that for now, pursuing an idea of herd immunity through COVID-19 vaccination is fruitless. Ontario has confirmed 96,745 cases of COVID-19 and 3,383 related deaths since January 15, including 12 more deaths Tuesday.

This means that Apple is affirmative that a future software update will be able to fix the problems.

But the coalition of states, led by Arizona, Arkansas and IN, argued that Apple's update was deceptive and the company should have either replaced batteries or disclosed the issue publicly. Dozens of Redditors reported having responsiveness issues as well with the Mini, with many users noting the issue appeared to be protective cases on their phones (both ones from Apple and ones from third parties).

"Apple, of course, fully understood such effects on sales". "I appreciate Apple acknowledging, with today's settlement, the importance of retaining that trust when it comes to helping consumers manage these same devices".

The iPhone maker allegedly misled consumers through software updates that purposely slowed iPhone performance to mask battery issues that made the phones susceptible to unexpected power shutoffs.

Under Wednesday's settlement, Apple will pay Nebraska $1,339,427.

It is now locked in a legal battle with Epic Games - amid accusations the iPhone-maker uses its stranglehold over its App Store to unfairly charge developers.

The lawsuit, brought by 33 states and the District of Columbia, claimed Apple mislead its customers into believing they needed new devices, instead of letting them know they could upgrade their batteries and avoid numerous issues they were dealing with.
