United Kingdom says door remains 'ajar' for post-Brexit trade deal

Gove Says UK Still Wants EU Trade Deal, Door Is Still 'Ajar'

Michael Gove Tells Michel Barnier “Ball is in Your Court” Amid Fading Hopes for a UK-EU Trade Deal

Barley, a German-British MEP, admitted to German public broadcaster NDR that talks had become "increasingly hard".

There is "no point" in Michel Barnier travelling to London on Monday for planned Brexit talks, Downing Street has said, after Boris Johnson said negotiations were over - unless Brussels adopted a "fundamental change of approach".

The bloc had squandered some of the progress made in negotiations because it had not been willing to intensify talks or produce detailed legal texts, Gove said.

"The trade talks are over".

Barley, who sat in the Bundestag from 2013 to 2019, does not believe the trade talks will be extended past the EU's mid-November deadline. "Businesses call on leaders on both sides to find a route through", business groups said in their joint statement on Sunday.

European leaders have sent in negotiator Michel Barnier to continue the talks.

In a sign of a lack of confidence in the United Kingdom government's position, the rating agency Moody's cut Britain's debt rating to "Aa3" from "Aa2", putting the country on the same level as Belgium and the Czech Republic.

'That is why we told Michel Barnier that there is no point in him coming to London this week unless there is a fundamental change of approach from the European Union'.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he thought Johnson had signalled that London was ready to compromise.

There was also criticism from within the Union as Wales First Minister Mark Drakeford accused Mr Johnson of "gambling with British jobs and security" and called his position a "huge mistake".

On Friday, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said there was "no point" in Mr Barnier travelling to London unless the 27 European Union member states were willing to alter their position or wanted to discuss sector by sector arrangements to prepare for no deal.

Mr Johnson has stopped short of acting on his earlier threat to totally shut down negotiations if no deal was agreed by the European Union summit this month - though his spokesperson argued that the bloc had "effectively ended" talks with its statement about not wanting to change its position.

"Unless that fundamentally changes, then we're going to have to come out on Australian terms, but we'll prosper mightily nonetheless".

British businesses are growing increasingly concerned a trade deal will not be in place when the transition period ends meaning they will be hammered by high tariffs.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was keen for a deal, though Macron was more downbeat.
