Microsoft acquires Fallout maker Bethesda in $7.5bn deal

This the company behind Bethesda Softworks.

However, console gaming is just one sector of an industry that's projected to generate $200 billion in annual revenue next year.

The massive acquisition deal - which will cost Microsoft a gargantuan $7.5 billion - has guaranteed Xbox exclusivity for games from Bethesda Softworks and all of its studios.

The deal includes Alpha Dog Games, Arkane Studios, id Software, Bethesda Softworks/Bethesda Game Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, and ZeniMax Online Studios.

Smaller and medium-sized studios were ideal acquisition targets for Microsoft over the past couple of years as it focused on concluding the Xbox One era, however, with Microsoft's recent and dramatic expansion of storefronts and services, the company may have the tools to financially support and distribute Bethesda games at its current scale. When Phil Spencer says they're not into exclusives, I'm inclined to believe him. According to him, the American company will increase the publisher's work by sharing its resources with them.

Just as they took the bold first steps to bring The Elder Scrolls franchise to the original Xbox, Bethesda were early supporters of Xbox Game Pass, bringing their games to new audiences across devices and have been actively investing in new gaming technology like cloud streaming of games. What this means going forward into a new generation of consoles is up in the air though. Xbox fans certainly have good reason to celebrate.

The Elder Scrolls Online Will Remain on PS4 After Bethesda's Microsoft Acquisition
Pricing of the consoles is similar, and PlayStation is thought to have an edge but players are strongly driven by game content. Add to that the financial crisis everyone is now facing with the pandemic and things seem just a bit clearer.

Xbox's Phil Spencer promising it won't be cutting back on quality at Bethesda, which will still publish its own titles.

The deal "includes Microsoft's intent to bring Bethesda's future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or PC, like 'Starfield, ' the highly anticipated, new space epic now in development by Bethesda Game Studios", the press release said. This last part of the statement drew attention. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has sold more than 30 million copies, a feat achieved in part because it's been sold across so many platforms that it's become a self-fulfilling meme. These franchises certainly will sell a lot on PS5 as well. Is there a chance Xbox will allow the Bethesda games it will soon own to be released on competing consoles? Possibly, this same exclusive approach will not be repeated for Bethesda games on the Sony console.
