"Also leaves, if you have years of leaves, dried leaves on the ground, it just sets it up", Trump added.

"Where you have lots of people living on small acreages close together, and you've got houses and barns and sheds and corrals and fences, it's very hard to do a prescribed burn", Gersbach said.

Scientists say wildfires are all but inevitable, and the main drivers are plants and trees drying out due to climate change and more people living closer to areas that burn.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has argued that the fires are driven mostly by global warming, acknowledged as he met with Trump that better forest management was needed.

Newsom announced there is stewardship between the state and the U.S. Forest Service to get to a million acres a year in active forest management, but with this year's fire season at over three million, Newsom says it's a step forward but millions of acres are the goal, not just a million.

The wildfires also claimed the lives of 27 people last week, and officials remain concerned that this week's weather conditions will not bring a respite to the region.
