South Dakota AG reported hitting a deer when he actually struck and killed a 56-year-old man

He's shown here speaking in Sioux Falls, S.D.in February 2014. He called police and informed them that he had struck something, a spokesperson for Ravnsborg told the New York Times. The body of Joe Boever, 55, was found the next morning, authorities said. He released a two-page letter about the incident to the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls late Monday.

"I am shocked and filled with sorrow following the events of last night", Ravnsborg, a Republican, said in a statement obtained by The Mitchell Republic.

Ravnsborg's office said he called 911 after the accident, but state investigators did not reveal whether he reported the crash via 911. He added that he thought it was "a large animal (likely a deer)". He said that he had used the flashlight from his cell phone to look around the area at the time, but could see nothing, and presumed he must have hit an animal.
