Israelis continue protests over Netanyahu alleged corruption, Covid-19 response

Israel is to re-impose a second national lockdown, after a spike in coronavirus cases.

Housing and Construction Minister Ya'acov Litzman, from the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party, announced his resignation in protest over the lockdown, arguing it had been deliberately delayed until the start of the Jewish holiday when it could have been imposed a month ago. The lockdown, was, however, criticised by many sectors of the workforce and was also slammed by the opposition as well citing it as a "proof of government failure".

Netanyahu said Israelis will be limited from traveling more than 500 meters from their homes except for essential needs like food and medicine.

Some government ministers meanwhile have pointed fingers at what they've called an undisciplined public, who they have accused of violating restrictions against public gatherings and mask wearing. Food stores and pharmacies will remain operational, as well as private businesses that don't have face-to-face customers, and deliveries may still take place.

At this time, corona cases are increasing day by day. Outdoor events will be restricted to 20 individuals, while indoor events will be restricted to 10. "And we certainly won't be able to celebrate with our extended families", stated Netanyahu. "I see the vaccine on the way, and I see the fast testing that is on the way", he added.

If the Israeli public viewed the original lockdown in March as a health imperative, then the upcoming one is seen as the outcome of a government fiasco. We did not fail.

Meanwhile, Yaakov Litzman, a minister in Israel government has resigned to protest against the restrictions that overlap with important Jewish festivals. "I did everything so that we could live alongside the coronavirus, with rules here and there", he said. Under the circumstances that were created, we had no choice.

Israel had imposed strict lockdown measures for almost two months from mid-March, which reduced the number of daily infections to below 10.

Since the outbreak began, the country has reported more than 156,000 cases and 1,119 deaths. Unless otherwise noted, the author is writing in his/her personal capacity.
