Fire in landmark building in central Beirut put out: report

The fire erupted in a futuristic seafront building that was close to completion after years of construction.

A fire that appeared in a landmark structure in main Beirut's commercial district on Tuesday has actually been snuffed out, civil defence authorities George Abou Moussa informed Reuters.

Fires continue to erupt at nearby Beirut Port following the massive August 4 port explosion that killed more than 190 people and injured 6,500 more. The explosion of almost 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the port for six years also left a quarter of a million people homeless. The disaster sparked massive protests and prompted the resignation of the government.
