Trump Announces Another Historic Middle East Peace Deal, With Israel And Bahrain

On 11 September 2020, US President Donald Trump tweeted that Manama had reached an agreement with Tel Aviv to normalise diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Israel.

At a recent online Arab League meeting, foreign ministers of the bloc were not able to come up with a resolution condemning last month's normalisation of ties between Israel and the UAE.

However, the Bahrain-Israel deal has enraged the Palestinian Authority, which strongly condemned it, while blasting the United States for pressuring Arab countries into normalizing ties with Israel.

The deal was also welcomed by Oman. The joint statement said in part: "Opening direct dialogue and ties between these two dynamic societies and advanced economies will continue the positive transformation of the Middle East and increase stability, security, and prosperity in the region". And I am very hopeful that there will be more to follow, he said, adding that there's tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of other countries to also join.

Belarusian security forces detain at least 20 people during protests in Minsk
Moscow offered Lukashenko support by sending it would send paratroopers to Belarus for "Slavic Brotherhood" joint drills. Lukashenko will visit Russian Federation for talks with Putin on Monday as both countries start joint military drills.

For many, it was no more than a betrayal of the so-called Palestinian cause and some have even taken to Twitter to vent anger at the decision under the hashtag #BahrainisAgainstNormalisation, or #بحرينيون_ضد_التطبيع.

In reality, the agreements are more of a reflection of the mutual strategic interests of Israel and the Gulf states with regards to Iran.

The country has longtime maintained its neutrality in a turbulent region.

According to the joint statement of the U.S., the Kingdom of Bahrain and Israel, Bahrain has agreed to formalise the deal with Israel at a ceremony to be held on September 15 at the White House. The region's biggest country has given no indication that it is about to do so. Although Morocco has no official diplomatic relations with Israel, there are tourism and trading relations between the two nations.

While the deals are popular among Israelis, the prime minister has drawn criticism for the timing of his flight, which comes as the country braces for a second major coronavirus-induced lockdown set to begin Friday that will see schools and many businesses shuttered for three weeks.

PA Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh issued a statement condemning the breach of the Arab position and claimed that short-term considerations guided Bahrain in its relations with the United States at the expense of its strategic Arab ambitions.

AFTER the UAE became the third Arab state in decades to recognise Israel last month, it had been predicted that this would create a domino effect, with other Arab and Muslim states following suit.

While Trump's approach has pushed the Palestinians into a corner, it has also vindicated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's longstanding belief that his country can secure its future and avoid global isolation without making any concessions to the Palestinians.
