Ottawa's jobless rate up slightly to 9.2% in August

Canadian economy added 246,000 jobs in August, unemployment rate 10.2%

The unemployment rate in Western Alberta has dropped more than two percent in August. However, their employment rate is still 87.4 per cent of what it was before the pandemic.

As of the week of August 9 to 15, the total number of Canadian workers affected by the COVID-19 economic shutdown stood at 1.8 million, according to the report. These gains suggest that the sector is almost nearing its pre-pandemic levels, reaching 97.6% from a low of 88.5%.

"The labor market recovery continued in August, but the going is getting tougher", CIBC analyst Andrew Grantham said, noting that the latest figures were in line with forecasts.

The unemployment rate fell to 10.2 per cent in August compared with 10.9 per cent in July.
