Georgia school with large crowds reports positive cases

Social Distancing at Georgia High School

Georgia High School Suspends Students for Tweeting Pics of Packed Campus

This past Tuesday, a concerning photo of a crowded school hallway at Georgia's North Paulding High School went viral.

"This morning my school called and they have deleted my suspension", she said.

By then, sophomore Hannah Watters, 15, had already revealed on Twitter that her suspension had been rescinded. Split dismissal staggers dismissal times and is supposed to help with social distancing. However, just days after her suspension - and reports in Buzzfeed and The New York Times about that suspension - the kid responsible for the self-described "good trouble" has had her suspension lifted.

The school's claim was that Hannah and another student were suspended for violating school policy about social media and posting images of minors without consent.

"Not only did they open, but they have not been safe", the student told Buzzfeed.

Paulding County School District did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

In Cherokee County, dozens of seniors gathered at two of the district's six high schools to take traditional first-day-of-school senior photos, with students squeezing together in black outfits.

"Students must not be disciplined for exposing health and safety issues at their school, particularly in the midst of a pandemic", said Harris, whose group advocates for student journalists. Administrators reversed the suspensions on Friday following the backlash.

Watters followed the lead of another North Paulding High School student who shared a similar photo.

Paulding Superintendent Brian Otott says the photo was taken out of context to criticize the school's re-opening. The message sent was also to reassure them that their student was not known to be in close contact with this particular student-athlete.

"In the handbook that the school gives us, it does say that you're not allowed to post pictures of the school online and other things like that", he said. As you have seen, the exposure has escalated quickly.

"Student and staff safety will be the paramount factor in determining the pace at which we will move", Wilbanks wrote, adding that changes might be needed "based on the still-fluid COVID-19 situation".

School officials initially suspended the student for five days, a family member of the student told WGCL. "New equipment, additional processes, we have quite a few children who will be participating in class virtually and that brings about an additional level of work and support that we have to provide". We have also identified additional staffing and resources so that we can begin accommodating those on the waiting list for virtual instruction.

Otott said that he and his staff will be "reviewing student discipline matters" that happened this week, likely referring to Watters and the other student.
