World Health Organization expects long-term response efforts against COVID-19

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stressed that the United Nations health agency had declared a top-level public health emergency on Jan 30, when there were fewer than 100 cases and no deaths outside China, where the virus first emerged.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has extended its emergency of worldwide concern over the coronavirus pandemic for another three months, the WHO Emergency Committee said Saturday, following its meeting on July 31 that took place in Geneva, Trend reports citing TASS.

Saying that young people can be infected and can transmit the virus to others, Tedros stressed that young people must take the same precautions to protect themselves and others.

"Although vaccine development is happening at record speed, we must learn to live with this virus, and we must fight it with the tools we have", Tedros said.

The head of the World Health Organization says some European countries have seen a resurgence in coronavirus cases partly because young people are not taking the risk seriously enough.

As WHO officials suggest, the world's youth should correctly understand the present situation and be leaders and drivers of change during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"More than 16.5 million cases have now been reported to World Health Organization, and more than 650,000 deaths".

Kerkhove noted that young people need to contribute more to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
