Bottas beats Hamilton in Mercedes one-two in final practice

Lewis Hamilton took an extraordinary victory in a dramatic finish to the British Grand Prix despite suffering a puncture on the last lap.

Hamilton crossed the line just over five seconds clear of Verstappen to record his third consecutive win, and joked that his "heart stopped" on the final lap. But his hadn't been the only one.

Kimi Raikkonen's Alfa Romeo slows down the Hangar Straight with what appears to have been a front wing failure, with chunk of it missing on the left-hand side.

"I felt certain that I still had plenty of life left on the tyres".

"Up until that last lap everything was relatively smooth sailing", said the six-time world champion of a race with two long safety auto periods.

Verstappen says there was no predicting Hamilton would suffer his issue, counting his second place as a lucky one rather than a missed opportunity.

The champions had struggled in Friday's sweltering heat, but 20 minutes into FP3 they were back on top with Bottas and then Hamilton leading the way, both lapping inside Stroll's best time from the opening day.

And the extra point for fastest lap is always nice too.

"The tyre was working totally fine, to the point I think I could have pushed and done some decent laps towards the end pace-wise, but fortunately I didn't". Sainz had been running in fourth position after Bottas' drop down the order, but after pitting himself he would finish 13th.

In an astonishing end to a race he had dominated from pole position, the Mercedes driver nursed his stricken auto across the finish line to stretch his Formula One world championship lead to 30 points.

"I would much prefer to be having a super-close battle with these two here because that's what gets me going - it's not a close battle with Max and Charles in qualifying".

"There was a lot of debris on the track, there was one vehicle ahead of me, it may have been Kimi or someone like that, that lost his wing, came off right in front of me on one of the laps".

"We were particularly concerned with Valtteri getting that puncture, because Max had reported big vibrations as well", Horner told Channel 4. Then it was a question of whether he could get around the remainder of the lap - more than half of it - before Verstappen caught him. This kind thing we can't really afford but, obviously, Lewis had a good race, but he also got away [with it], in a way.
