Virginia's businesses and nonprofits took in between $9.5 billion to $18.2 billion through the U.S. Treasury Department's Payroll Protection Program, new data released Monday shows.

"(There were) certainly some hurdles to overcome really around getting the loan to be fully forgiven and turned into a grant".
For example, a Reuters analysis of the data found that 827 companies reported saving at least 400 jobs with a loan smaller than US$150,000.
"It's kind of counterintuitive to think that small businesses are looking for government handouts, but remember, this was in reaction to what government told them they had to do, to shut their business", Geiger said.
The SBA and Treasury Dept. hoped to solve those loopholes which allowed a company like the Los Angeles Lakers to get a PPP loan when a second round of funding was approved. The government data said almost 110,000 PPP loans were awarded in Virginia, with the vast majority - 93,000 - under $150,000.

The overwhelming majority of PPP loans have been for $50,000 or less.
Dan Bates, president and CEO of the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, said one of the biggest challenges for businesses was that the guidelines were not defined and kept changing. Shaheen & Gordon's loan was significantly larger than the average amount given to PPP recipients in April. Nationwide, loans above $150,000 accounted for 75% of all dollars disbursed through the program, the SBA said.
