HP's new Reverb G2 virtual reality headset delivers 4K VR gaming

The VR landscape is changing, and how people interact with technology, and each other, is evolving. With compatibility across both SteamVR and Windows Mixed Reality, 4 access to everything VR is within reach. HP also claims that Reverb G2 is the world's highest resolution VR headset among major vendors.

Specifically, the HP Reverb G2's lenses are designed by Valve, and to achieve stunning visual quality these are combined with boosts to clarity, contrast, and brightness, as well as the reduction of persistence and perceived mura (the "dirty goggles" effect that some complained was a problem with the original Reverb).

"We're happy to see the expansion of the VR ecosystem in a way that is great for high-fidelity gaming", said Jeremy Selan, VR Engineer at Valve. For those unaware, Windows Mixed Reality is a platform that combines virtual reality with augmented reality for a more immersive experience for users. The displays offer a refresh rate of 90Hz.

Technically, the Reverb G2's new built-in audio are speakers and not headphones because they don't actually touch your ears when in use. Plus, the new audio solution is spatial audio ready, allowing the user to experience a true sense of 3D space when immersed in VR worlds, with support for Microsoft spatial audio, and HP Labs new spatial audio format that is anchored in artificial intelligence, new signal processing, and psychoacoustics.

Connecting directly to the headset, our new and improved 6 meter cable is thinner, lighter and longer than ever, allowing for more room to move freely.

The HP Reverb G2's key features include dual 2160×2160 LCD panels screens providing a 114-degree field of view, revamped 10mm speakers supporting spatial audio, and the headset should also feel more comfortable thanks to an increased facemask cushion for better weight distribution. In addition, the mask can be easily rotated 90 degrees to return to the real world in no time. While the Reverb G2 utilizes the standard Windows Mixed Reality tracking system, HP has enhanced the device's two front-facing cameras with a camera on each side.
