Brazil's Bolsonaro tests positive for COVID-19

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro awaits coronavirus test result amid reports he is running fever

The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has announced he has tested positive for coronavirus live on television.

He revealed to reporters Monday night that he had taken a coronavirus test and was awaiting results, adding that doctors had also taken a scan of his lungs that had come back "clean".

Brazil has recorded 65,000 deaths and 1.6 million diagnosed cases of coronavirus, making its outbreak the second worst in the world.

The head of the prestigious Royal Society science journal said Tuesday that people who refuse to wear masks should even be stigmatized in the same way as drink-drivers.

The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, confirmed that he has tested positive for coronavirus during an interview broadcast to TV Brasil.

Later Tuesday, he posted a video to Facebook of him taking his third dose of hydroxychloroquine, which has also been promoted by US President Donald Trump. Experts believe that in fact majority died from COVID-19.

Bolsonaro would not be the first national leader to fall ill with the virus. On the other hand, if Bolsonaro's symptoms worsen to the point he requires intensive care, and particularly if he dies, it could change the tide of public debate, despite the minimal scientific relevance of a sample size of one. He has said his history as an athlete would protect him from the virus, and it would be nothing more than a "little flu" were he to contract it. The 65-year-old has repeatedly and harshly criticized the virus-related restrictions to everyday life - some of which have since been relaxed - imposed by states and municipal governments. "You need to get the economy in gear", he said.

Tens of thousands of deaths later, Bolsonaro has remained firmly supportive of reopening and skeptical of social distancing, both for others and himself.

He said he canceled a trip this week to Brazil's northeast region and will continue working via videoconference and receive rare visitors when he needs to sign a document.

Over the weekend, the Brazilian leader celebrated American Independence Day with the USA ambassador to Brazil, then shared pictures on social media showing him in close quarters with the diplomat, several ministers and aides.

Bolsonaro has emulated his political role model Donald Trump in voicing skepticism about the virulence of the virus, although the U.S. president has moderated his tone.

The US embassy in Brasilia said via Twitter on Monday that the ambassador had lunch on July 4 with Mr Bolsonaro, five ministers and the President's son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro.
