The global health body said its own regional office had picked up a media statement by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission from their website on cases of "viral pneumonia".

In the chronology, the WHO had said that on December 31, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission in Hubei province had reported cases of pneumonia to it.

The lack of clarity led multiple outlets - including Axios, the Washington Post, and the BBC - to report that Chinese authorities told the WHO's China office about the outbreak on December 31.

World Health Organization had on April 9 published an initial timeline of its communications. But China never shared the fact a similar killer virus was discovered, the newspaper reported.

Soon, the WHO's epidemic information service also took note of another report in the US-based global epidemiological surveillance network, ProMed, that mentioned about new cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, whose cause was unknown.

China's health experts have pointed to Spain, where the deadly virus was found in a waste water sample collected in March previous year.

After which, World Health Organization asked the Chinese authorities on two occasions, on January 1 and January 2, for information about these cases, which they provided on January 3.
