"In light of recent events around our country and feedback from the community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name", a statement from the team read.

The owner of the Washington Redskins said Friday that the National Football League team had launched a review of its name, after years of resisting entreaties to do so.

In a statement, the team said the organization has held "initial discussions" with the league recently about the name.

The statement from the team, sent by email to reporters, did not commit to any specific time frame for a decision or guarantee the name would be changed, but included quotes from Snyder and Redskins head coach Ron Rivera, both of whom expressed support for the effort.

Investors this week wrote to FedEx, PepsiCo and other sponsors asking them to request a change. The Athletic reports that the team plans to talk to Native American leaders, players, staff, alumni, and fans before any possible name change.

"Just like black people stood up, I feel like Native Americans, they should have the same rights to do the same", said Chuky Torley.

A statue of Marshall was removed from the team's former Washington venue, RFK Stadium, on June 19 in the wake of protests seeking racial equality following the death of George Floyd.

"But right now, this thing seems to be snowballing, and it's going to be something that you really, really have to think about", Mitchell said.
