Governor Orders Closure of Indoor Operations in Santa Barbara County

California is ordering certain sectors in counties on the state's County Monitoring List to close indoor operations immediately, Newsom said on Wednesday. San Diego County is not on that list.

Gov. Newsom also recommends that firework shows in communities on the state's watch list should be canceled. Other counties include Contra Costa, Fresno, Glenn, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Merced, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Solano, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Ventura.

Gavin Newsom's order will remain in place for at least three weeks and also affects bars, wineries, movie theaters, museums and other businesses.

Santa Barbara and Goleta have already cancelled firework displays but chose to keep local beaches open, much to the dismay of residents who fear people from other counties will travel to the area for the holiday weekend.

"We'll be looking at the health orders in relation to indoor vs. outdoor activities, the Fourth of July", Newsom said Tuesday. Later on Monday, Los Angeles County officials ordered beaches and bike paths closed for the Fourth of July weekend. He added that counties that fail to enforce orders can lose out on state funding.

"This doesn't mean restaurants are shut down", Newsom said. Some counties have already moved to cancel fireworks displays over the weekend.

Governor Gavin Newsom says that more information will be released this afternoon regarding new steps created to crack down on people ignoring health warnings about large social gatherings. "We're going to need to do more to express our concern about that, and the seriousness of face coverings and physical distancing".

California's COVID-19 positivity rate has crept up to 6% in the last two weeks, a key indicator of community spread, according to Gov. Newsom.

Gavin Newsom is expected to announce new restrictions ahead of the July 4 weekend in his latest live press conference at noon.
