Coronavirus CAF Postpones Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a decision, at its virtually held executive committee, to postpone the staging of the next edition of its premier competition, the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), to be held in Cameroon next year. CHAN is a tournament that features only locally based players.

"Health is our number one priority".

Wins against Sudan in two back-to-back qualifiers originally scheduled for March could have sealed early qualification for the Black Stars to play in Africa's flagship football competition.

The Cup of Nations was set to be played in January and February 2021, reverting back to its traditional winter slot after experimenting with a summer tournament in Egypt a year ago.

It's really just local governments and they tend to respond politically more than ethically or scientifically, ' said Dr Caplan. The drug was developed over 10 years ago when the company was searching for treatments for hepatitis C but did not develop it.

This is the second change of date for the tournament. No new host has been found since Congo withdrew previous year.

"I think this is a wise decision because time is very short now and they could not postpone to the summer", Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr told BBC Sport Africa.

CAF also cancelled the 2020 African Women's Cup of Nations and approved the creation of the first-ever African Women's Champions League.

In April, Caf confirmed the postponement of the 2020 Awcon qualifier a few days prior to the first round of matches due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The competition was slated to take place in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6, 2021.

Other CAF special events including its star-studded awards ceremony, featuring the likes of Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, have also been cancelled.

In efforts to further boost the women's game, Caf is implementing a four-year women's football strategic plan for Africa, which was launched in collaboration with Fifa last November in Egypt.

The 2020 Women's AFCON will not be played this year. Along with their club commitments, many will start the year with the Africa Cup of Nations and then end it with a World Cup in Qatar.
