California Gov. Newsom Orders Bars Closed in Multiple Counties, Including LA

California on Sunday ordered some bars to close as the state and a dozen others face the worst surge in CCP virus cases since the start of the pandemic.

The enormous surge in cases, which now totals more than 223,900 statewide, has prompted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to order anyone traveling to the state from California - and 15 other states that have seen recent spikes in cases - to self-quarantine for 14 days. He also recommended that bars be closed in eight other counties.

"COVID-19 is still circulating in California, and in some parts of the state, growing stronger".

As to enforcing the governor's rules, Constantine said the county will continue to advise businesses affected to comply with new rules and ask that they follow the governor's mandate in an effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve. The California Department of Public Health, however, identifies bars as "the highest risk sector of non-essential business now open", according to a press release.

Bars are especially ripe locations for coronavirus spread because unguarded social mixing within and among groups of patrons can go on for hours.

In Sacramento, health officials echoed the concerns raised by the Newsom administration. "Closing bars in these counties is one of a number of targeted actions counties are implementing across our state to slow the virus' spread and reduce risk".

Sacramento County spokeswoman Kimberly Nava on Sunday said local health officials are discussing the possibility of ordering bars to close. Almost 5,900 people have died from coronavirus complications in the state.

Of the hospitalized cases, 43 were at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, 16 were at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and one was the Lompoc Valley Medical Center, according to the state Department of Public Health. More than 5,800 have died.

"We had to move 500 patients out of their hospital system into surrounding county systems", Newsom said of "extraordinary rates" in the 190,000-person county along the U.S. -Mexico border.

On Monday, Newsom and California Health & Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly stressed that the state is basing decisions about where to intervene on specific health data.

Bars, brew pubs and breweries present a particular challenge in terms of preventing the spread of coronavirus, Ansorg said, as people tend to be crowded close together indoors, and mask wearing typically does not occur while people are drinking. Hospitalization rates are climbing fastest in rural Imperial, Kings and Stanislaus counties.
