Jennifer Hudson plays the music legend. That's in no small part to her biggest hit, "Respect", from which the upcoming biopic takes its name. The trailer delves into Franklin's embracing of her confidence and her voice as a leading activist for civil rights.

Directed by Liesl Tommy, Respect follows Franklin (played by Hudson)'s life from her childhood days to her worldwide fame. Marking the first authorized feature film based on Franklin's life, the movie directed by Tony-nominee Liesl Tommy (Broadway's Eclipsed) and is written by Emmy-nominee Tracey Scott Wilson (The Americans, Fosse/Verdon).

Franklin, who in 2018 died of pancreatic cancer at the age 76, was a producer on the film.

The movie also stars Marc Maron, Mary J. Blige, Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, Tate Donovan, Tituss Burgess and Sky Dakota Turner. It will now have a limited release in the US on Christmas Day, before a full wide release on January 15.

This project is separate from the one National Geographic season of "Genius" starring Cynthia Erivo as Franklin, set to debut sometime in late 2020. It will then expand January 8, 2021 in theaters with a full-on wide release January 15, which is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
