Florida Reports 9,000 New Coronavirus Cases In Biggest Daily Surge

In response to a massive spike in COVID-19 cases, while bars and nightclubs continued to flout social distancing requirements, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order Friday banning drinking alcohol at bars, statewide.

The new record for positive tests comes as several states at the center of a new surge in infections took steps back from efforts to ease restrictions on businesses.

That number was a leap from the state's previous record of 5,511 new daily cases, reached on June 24.

Abbot's announcement stunned Texas bar owners who said the governor, a Republican in his second term, had given them little notice.

Texas and Florida closed bars and reimposed other curbs on Friday as the number of infections in the US hit a single-day record with increases in 16 States, mostly in the south and west.

Of the new cases, two of the people are in their 50s, one is in their 40s, one is in their 30s and one is a child under 10. In front are Polk with 5,682; Woodbury, 3,095; Black Hawk, 1,941; Buena Vista, 1,678; Linn, 1,136; and Dallas with 1,097.


That is almost 30 percent of the state's total tally, said the report. Those areas are seeing a high number of COVID-19 cases.

"I think we are seeing an increase in the use of our health care system", she said.

In keeping with the state and nationwide trend toward younger people testing positive, the median age of Florida patients is 34.
