Modi launches Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyaan to generate employment for migrants

The scheme's name is Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan, which the Prime Minister said is meant to "boost employment and livelihood opportunities for migrant workers returning to villages, in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak".

At least 25,000 "returnee" migrant workers will be benefited in these six states which are: Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Migrant laborer Md. Amin says that the lockdown did not provide work for months in Mumbai, and is now happy to work in the village and live with the family.

"There are some people in India who will yet not pat your back in appreciation of your efforts, but I will keep on highlighting it, Modi said in an obvious jibe at the critics of government's welfare interventions".

World Health Organization chief: Coronavirus pandemic still accelerating
The World Health Organization, WHO, has warned of a "new and unsafe phase" of the coronavirus pandemic. Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro has been encouraging businesses there to reopen.

About 90 per cent of the state's population depends on agriculture and labour, and there was a sense of despair among the poor, agricultural labourers, migrant workers and marginal farmers as the state has not been covered under the scheme, he said.

Further, Modi said, "The country understands both your feelings and your requirements". The program being started through Khagaria today is a medium to meet your requirements. Chief ministers of five other states as well as Union ministers of concerned ministries participated in the virtual launch. "It will be run in 116 villages in six states", he added.

The Prime Minister flagged-off the rs 50,000 crore scheme from village Telihar in Bihar's Khagaria district via video-conferencing in the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

Modi also said India is proud of the sacrifice made by Army personnel in Ladakh's Galwan Valley on June 15.

"I pay tributes to the braves who laid down their lives for the nation", Modi said in his address.
