US cities under curfew after fresh anti-race protests, looting

Floyd died on May 25 shortly after four police officers arrested him in Minneapolis.

His death caused outrage across a nation that is politically and racially divided during a polarizing presidential campaign, and has recently been released from strict stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic that threw millions out of work.

Authorities imposed curfews in the capital Washington and other major U.S. cities to prevent fresh rioting after anti-racism protesters again took to the streets to voice their fury at police brutality.

The president reportedly clashed with Illinois' Democratic Gov. J.B. Priztker, who confronted Trump about his comments during the crisis.

"It's a movement, if you don't put it down it will get worse and worse", Trump said, according to CNN. "These people are ANARCHISTS".

City and state officials deployed thousands of National Guard soldiers, enacted strict curfews and shut down mass transit systems to slow protesters' movements, but that did little to stop parts of many cities from again erupting into mayhem.

Politicians have also taken aim at the Trump administration, with Rep. Lori Trahan accusing the president of having "turned the lights off and turned his back" on US residents. Mayor Lori Lightfoot told a news conference Monday police fielded more than 30,000 calls Sunday, at times 2,000 calls in 30-minute periods.

"They keep killing our people", said Mahira Louis, 15, who marched with her mother and several hundred others in a peaceful protest through downtown Boston.
