The autopsy found the compression cut off blood to Mr Floyd's brain

Then, within one week, he was filmed kneeling on George Floyd's neck for eight minutes before he died; fired from the police department; and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

From Seattle to NY, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding tougher murder charges and more arrests over the death of Floyd, who stopped breathing after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

The findings differ from an official preliminary autopsy carried out by the county medical examiner.

Last week, Floyd's family attorney Mr Crump said he was commissioning the family's own autopsy.

The medical examiner's initial findings were that Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease, the complaint said.

Three other officers who were involved in the arrest have been fired but haven't been charged as of Monday afternoon.

"He was in good health", said Dr.

"Not only was the knee on George's neck a cause of his death, but so was the weight of the other two police officers on his back, who not only prevented blood flow to his brain but air flow to his lungs", said attorney Antonio Romanucci at a press conference.

"The cause of death in my opinion is asphyxia, due to compression to the neck - which can interfere with oxygen going to the brain - and compression to the back, which interferes with breathing", said Michael Baden, a former New York City medical examiner who was hired by Mr Floyd's family.

The death on May 25 of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, at the hands of police in Minneapolis ignited this latest wave of outrage in the U.S. - the "Black Lives Matter" movement - over law enforcement's repeated use of lethal force against African Americans, this one like others before captured on cellphone video. Baden said the knee to his back also contributed to the asphyxia, and said his conclusion is that it was a homicide.

"When he said, I can't breathe - unfortunately, many police are under the impression that if you can talk, that means you're breathing. That is not true", he said during the news conference.

The family's autopsy was conducted by Michael Baden and Allecia Wilson. Baden said the video of the scene provided evidence of the compression.
