NASA crew climb aboard ISS, after a 'slick' space flight

SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule has successfully docked at International Space Station (ISS) early Sunday morning, May 31. "I thank and congratulate Bob Behnken, Doug Hurley, and the SpaceX and Nasa teams for this significant achievement for the United States". The docking of the spacecraft took place 19 hours after the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center.

It also marked the first time that commercially developed space vehicles - owned and operated by a private entity rather than NASA - have carried Americans into orbit.

SpaceX owner Elon Musk said he was "quite overcome with emotion" when he saw his dream come true with a ideal liftoff Saturday.

Crew Dragon will now make a "hard capture", which involves using 12 latches to create an air-locked seal between Behnken and Hurley's crew cabin and their entrance to the space station. SpaceX is now the first private business to accomplish a feat - taking people to orbit - that had until now only been done by nations.

A rocket ship on Saturday successfully blasted off with two NASA astronauts from the USA state of Florida on their way to International Space Station (ISS), marking the beginning of new age in commercial space travel. Hurley and Behnken had named their capsule "Endeavour" after the retired Space Shuttle on which they both flew.

United States President Donald Trump spoke with Musk, and called him "one of the great brains".

This is SpaceX's final test flight for NASA's Commercial Crew Program and will provide critical data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft, and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking and landing operations. Since then, NASA, SpaceX and Boeing have worked for years to end that dependence. As a result, the space station is now short-staffed with only three astronauts aboard - Cassidy and two Russians, Ivan Vagner and Anatoly Ivanishin - limiting how much scientific research can be conducted. "There's really no major problems".

This was followed shortly after with a tweet from the ISS: "The SpaceX Crew Dragon docked to the station at 10:16am ET today". The astronauts took over manual control for a while, firing the thrusters to nudge the position of the spacecraft.

"During their stay Behnken and Hurley will continue to perform more checks on Endeavor in order to sign-off on its readiness".
