Several people were also injured by gunfire Thursday night in Louisville, Ky., where crowds have gathered to protest a grievance closer to home: the death of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman who was shot and killed by police in her own apartment earlier this year.

The local authorities were conciliatory in the first days of the protests, but have since called in the National Guard and stiffened their tone. State Governor Tim Walz accepted responsibility but said simply "there's more of them than us".

In a series of tweets hours after hundreds of demonstrators had massed outside the White House and scraped with officers in riot gear, Trump belittled them, doubted their allegiance to Floyd's memory, said they were "professionally managed".

Floyd died Monday after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck during an arrest for almost 9 minutes.

Over 2,500 police officers have been deployed in Minneapolis to help maintain order during the protests, according to John Harrington, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner, as cited by the media outlet. Police issued two warnings to disperse at 3:30 a.m. before the line of officers with shields advanced through park, some firing chemical spray.

The video reignited rage that civil rights activists said has long simmered in Minneapolis and cities across the country over persistent racial bias in the USA criminal justice system.

Another 500 Guard soldiers were mobilized in and around Minneapolis, where Floyd died and an officer faced charges Friday in his death.

Community activist Mel Reeves, who said he has led rallies to protest Floyd's killing, refused to discuss the mayor's response except to say that Frey had been "put in a hard position". Emilia Gonzalez Avalos, executive director of Navigate MN, said the people from the outside who burned down more buildings around Lake Street last night came to "cause more harm and pain in places where there's already harm and pain".

But Frey's leadership is being questioned after police failed to quell three nights of looting, rioting and fires that followed Floyd's death.

"The real reason we're here is because the police keep killing black folk all around the United States", says a young African American man who declined to be named. In Virginia's capital, a police cruiser was set on fire outside Richmond police headquarters, and a city transit spokeswoman said a bus set ablaze was "a total loss", news outlets reported.

Numerous protesters chanted, "No justice, no peace", and some carried signs that read, "End police brutality" and "I won't stop yelling until everyone can breathe".

They'll also hear from astronauts, engineers and other experts, including one commenting from the International Space Station. Bad weather forced officials to call off the launch just a few minutes before the scheduled lift-off at 20:30 GMT/UTC.

Trump said he watched the events from the White House and that the Secret Service did a "great job".

When CBC reached Craig to speak on Friday afternoon, he said there were roughly 700 peaceful protesters in front of police heaquarters.

The protesters were forced back by police down Randolph St. and several people were seen being arrested on video.

It was not until the cops resorted to tear gas and rubber bullets that the situation was brought under control.

Protests took hold in a swathe of cities including Boston, Dallas, Denver, Des Moines, Houston, Las Vegas, Memphis, and Portland.
