Spain coronavirus death toll overtakes China after sharp rise in cases

Health care systems in Europe and NY buckled under the strain, with Spain's death toll climbing to more than 4,000.

Spain recorded more than 700 deaths over the past 24 hours - surpassing China in the global death toll - making the country now second to only Italy, Al Jazeera reports.

As of Wednesday, 3,166 patients remain in critical condition, while as many as 5,367 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Spain.
