Health officials in China have published the first details on almost 45,000 cases of the novel coronavirus disease that originated there, saying more than 80% have been mild and new ones seem to be falling since early this month, although it's far too soon to tell whether the outbreak has peaked.

China says about 72,000 people have been infected and more than 1860 have died in mainland China, but numbers are rubbery because the country is counting many cases based on symptoms rather than the methods World Health Organization uses.

In its daily update, the Hubei province's health commission also reported 1,807 new cases, a decline on the number of new cases reported on Monday. A total of 12,552 coronavirus patients have by now been discharged from hospitals.

The new disease, called COVID-19, first emerged in late December in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has spread to more than two dozen other countries.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) health ministry yesterday reported 1 more COVID-19 case, which involves a 37-year-old Chinese man.

The proportion is higher in Wuhan, the Hubei capital where the outbreak started, but has fallen to 21.6 percent from a peak of 32.4 percent on January 28.

Japanese officials, meanwhile, confirmed 99 more people were infected by the new virus aboard the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess, bringing the total to 454.

The fatality rate for these confirmed cases was 2.3% - 2.8% for males and 1.7% for females. Outside China, the ship had the largest number of cases of COVID-19. As of now, there are over 71,000 cases of coronavirus confirmed and the death toll is of 1,776 people worldwide.

More than 300 American passengers have been flown home from a cruise ship after two weeks under quarantine off Japan, including 14 found to have coronavirus who were kept isolated on the flight.

Holland America Line said it is working with governments and health experts to track passengers who disembarked from its Westerdam cruise ship docked in Cambodia after an American woman tested positive for coronavirus in Malaysia.

They are swapping one quarantine for another, however, with U.S. authorities saying Saturday that on their return stateside, the passengers will have to undergo another two-weeks of observation and testing at one of two military bases.

According to Hongzhou, the hospital had set up a special clinic to administer plasma therapy and was selecting patients who were willing to donate.

Blood donors will undergo a test to ensure that they are not carrying the virus, said Wang Guiqiang, chief physician at Peking University First Hospital. Now, China is counting people who are diagnosed by way of symptoms, even if they have not tested positive. "We don't know how much time", he added.

A pandemic, Ryan suggested, would have to entail "efficient community transmission outside of China", where COVID-19, or the Novel Coronavirus, is believed to have originated.

Although new confirmed cases have declined in many of China's provinces, the country's leading epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan warned earlier that the outbreak may peak around late February and some mega cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou still face the risk of more cases, as more and more residents return to work.
