South Africa boss asks fans to respect Smith, Warner

Australia stars Steve Smith and David Warner ready to cop abuse from South African fans as they return to scene of the ball tampering saga

Steve Smith and David Warner ready to return to South Africa two years after ball-tampering scandal

The Aussies take on the Proteas in three T20s and three ODIs from February 21 to March 7, and it will be the first time that Warner and Smith have returned to South Africa since the infamous ball tampering scandal at Newlands back in early 2018 after which they were banned from global cricket for a year.

He also said that the Australian team is expecting to cop a lot from the South Africa crowd when the T20I series begins from February 21.

It was in the Johannesburg team hotel that Smith and Warner's unprecedented sanctions were handed down after the 2018 Cape Town cheating scandal erupted.

Not only the South African cricket board has also tightened their grip on the crowd and has requested them to not jeer at Smith and Warner, instead of asking them to respect the two players while they are on the field. It will be two years after the highly controversial ball-tampering scandal happened which did irreparable damage to the image of Australian cricket and saw three of the Kangaroos' players being banned for variable amounts of time.

The pair, who served 12-month bans for their parts in the affair, are part of the Australia squad that is due to contest three T20s and three ODIs against the Proteas. The series begins with a T20 worldwide at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on the 21st of February.

"I would beg South African fans to respect our opponents and not overdo these things", Faul said. "As much as we appreciate the support and you have to acknowledge the importance of people supporting these events I can only plead that people would treat players with respect".

"I'm sure we'll cop a little bit from the fans but it's nothing we haven't copped before".

Team-mate Josh Hazlewood is confident Smith and Warner will cope - and perhaps even be better for the criticism.

"They probably play better when it's like this". Often when you do that, they end up being on your side after a couple of overs.

"There hasn't been a huge amount of risk-taking in our selections, so we've got confidence in the 14 guys in South Africa that potentially they can take us forward to the T20 World Cup".
