U.S. to evacuate Americans from quarantined cruise ship in Japan

More than 1,600 people have died from the virus, which has spread to more than 24 countries.

"The effect of the coronavirus controls is appearing", Mi Feng, spokesman for the Health Commission, told reporters.

The coronavirus, thought to have emerged at a wildlife market in the central Chinese province of Hubei, has presented the ruling Communist Party with the huge challenge of stamping it out while at the same time minimizing damage to the world's second-largest economy.

But experts have questioned if the close quarters have contributed to the virus's spread. On Saturday, authorities in Beijing ordered a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all travelers returning to the city, with anyone found violating the rules subject to potential legal repercussions.

The US government is preparing to evacuate Americans who have been quarantined on a cruise ship in Japan for over a week, after dozens of people on board tested positive for the novel coronavirus earlier this month. Originally, Japan said that the quarantine would be over on February 19, but as more and more cases aboard the ship have been confirmed, local officials now say that only people who test negative for the COVID-19 virus will be released.

Over the past 3 days, the number of daily COVID-19 cases reported in China declined, with 5,090 reported Friday, 2,641 yesterday, and 2,009 today.

US evacuees will still be subjected to a 14-day quarantine once they are in the USA because "the degree of transmissibility on that cruise ship is essentially akin to being in a hot spot", Fauci explained on Face the Nation.

Live Caption is now only available on select Pixel models, but a similar feature is seemingly in the works for Chrome. Plus, since the processing is done on-device, it may be more secure than an over-air captioning system.

When Americans are evacuated, those who have symptoms won't be allowed to return and will have to stay in Japanese hospitals, Fauci told the news outlet.

The statement went on to say, "Canadians on board with immediate medical concerns are encouraged to consult ship personnel and medical authorities on board".

The unexpected finding upends a basic assumption by several governments, including the United States, that the ship was virus-free and that passengers could be greeted at proximity without protective gear and allowed to travel.

An elderly Quebecois couple from Gatineau, Que., aboard the Diamond Princess have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, their daughter said on Saturday. After arriving in the US, all of the passengers will need to go through another 14 days of quarantine - meaning they will have been under quarantine for a total of almost four weeks.

The U.S. charter flight will arrive in Japan Sunday evening, according to a statement from the embassy on Saturday.

"He's been taking his temperature multiple times a day".

Doyle said he hopes Canada won't follow the United States' plan of removing people from the ship only for them to be kept under quarantine for another two weeks afterward.

Dr. Ross Upshur, a physician and researcher who studies public health ethics at the University of Toronto, said there may be precautionary reasons for extending the quarantine of the returning Canadians, but that this needs to be clearly communicated.

"This was too much for Japan, and they shouldn't have had to bear the burden", she added. "It is disappointing for all of us".

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Saturday that 400 Americans would be flown home.

The province and its capital, Wuhan, have been virtually sealed off and locked down since January 23, with schools, offices and factories shut and most travel suspended. Millions are now working from home, with Chinese President Xi Jinping warning on Monday that the country needed to stabilize its economy and avoid mass layoffs.

Many factories are yet to re-open, disrupting supply chains in China and beyond for everyone from smartphone makers to auto manufacturers.

Economists say the current level of disruption is manageable.
