Stenhouse, Jr. Speeds To Pole For The Upcoming Daytona 500

Bowman, who won the Daytona 500 pole in 2018, earned his third straight front-row start for NASCAR's biggest event with a time of 46.305 seconds (194.363 mph) in the No. 88 Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE.

However, Stenhouse Jr. and Bowman are the only two locked into the starting field.

Busch was leading on a restart with nine laps to go and opted to start from the bottom lane after victor and teammate Denny Hamlin told Busch's crew that they would "race it out" without working together.

He would like to test that theory Sunday when he tries to zip past Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Alex Bowman on the front row for that coveted win. Anytime you can start the season off with a new organization and see all the work they put in - guys in the shop that I don't even know are working late nights.

Asked what it meant considering the offseason transition, Stenhouse said, "It's huge".

If failing to win the Daytona 500 is gnawing at the tempestuous Busch, he's not letting on.

"Yeah, there's a handful of us that feel like we have something to prove", Stenhouse said. The wind started picking up down the back straightaway - a little headwind. We cut bodies off. "When Mr. Hendrick shows up in Victory Lane knowing we're running his engine package and me showing up at their engine shop a few weeks ago to meet the guys is pretty special".

Only the front row is set for next weekend's race.

Bowman teammates Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson were the next fastest followed by 2019 victor Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Aric Almirola, William Byron, rookie Christopher Bell and Eric Jones.

"It takes a lot of people in the shop to make this vehicle as fast as it is", he said.

William Byron, rookie Christopher Bell and Erik Jones - the final vehicle to take a lap - completed the top 10.

Sunday each of the first four drivers piloted a Chevrolet equipped with a Hendrick engine.

Kaulig Racing's Justin Haley (47.364/190.018) and Beard Motorsports' Brendan Gaughan (47.633/188.945), who were 31st and 33rd on speed overall, led the way among the seven teams needing to time their ways into The Great American Race.

Next on-track action are the Duel 150s on Thursday evening to determine the 62 annual Daytona 500 starting line up.
