After reading off the list, nominations presenter Issa Rae, absolutely dripping in sarcasm, quipped: "Congratulations to those men".

Instead, the Academy went with all men, nominating Martin Scorsese for "The Irishman", Quentin Tarantino for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", Bong Joon Ho for "Parasite", Sam Mendes for "1917" and Todd Phillips for "Joker".

Of course, Issa Rae's line quickly became an online flash point on Twitter.

Other than the categories that are still, archaically, exclusively for women, like Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, the nominations gear towards the pale, male, and stale. Additionally, Lulu Wang was not nominated for her direction of The Farewell, despite receiving critical acclaim throughout the 2020 awards season.

Julia Garner and Pixie Lott were among the first to congratulate Pugh on her nomination, and Lily Allen posted three trophy emojis in the comments section.

Australian prime minister's approval rating slumps to 37 per cent after bushfires
Across New South Wales, 111 fires were still burning on Sunday, 40 of them not yet contained, but none at emergency level. Conditions eased over the weekend with showers forecast for NSW over the next few days.

The lack of women in this year's nominations list is not going unnoticed.

Little Women star Florence Pugh reacted to her first Oscar nomination in the most hilarious way.

Saiorse Ronan received a best actress nom and Greta Gerwig was snubbed for best director at the Oscars.

South Korea's Parasite picked up six nominations, including for best global feature film of the year, achievement in production design and best original screenplay.

The Academy Awards has a long and rich tradition of not recognizing female directors.

The film 1917 followed up its Golden Globes win and strong opening weekend at the box office with nominations not just for its technical achievement (including Mendes' directing and Roger Deakins' cinematography) but for best screenplay, too. It walked away with six in total: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

Though Gerwig was, by all accounts, snubbed for Best Director for Little Women this year, she was recognized in 2017 for Lady Bird.

Sir Elton and Taupin earned a nomination for best original song for (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman and are up against tracks from Toy Story 4, Breakthrough and Frozen 2. It's a odd trend in how these ceremonies have gone, as Little Women is being recognized, but Gerwig is not.

The nominees for best animated feature film: "How to Train a Dragon: The Hidden World"; "Toy Story 4"; "I Lost My Body"; "Klaus"; "Missing Link".

According to a recent study, there were five women among the directors of 2018's top 100 films. And now the cast of Little Women have broken their silence on the subject.
