Australia openers David Warner and Aaron Finch both struck superb centuries to complement their bowlers' inspired display as the touring side handed out a 10-wicket thrashing to India in the opening one-day global in Mumbai.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden was surprised to see India opener Virat Kohli coming out to bat at No.4 in the first ODI against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

In a year when a Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled, Kohli was asked about the relevance of playing bilateral 50-overs matches and the India captain said his team was "excited" and looking forward to the challenge. In reply, Australia chased down the total inside 38 overs thanks to unbeaten tons from their openers David Warner and Aaron Finch.

"I think we will speak to our wives first", Warner said. "We didn't get enough runs". It's just a great effort from our fast bowlers to knock India over for 255.

Warner leapt in the air with his trademark celebration after majestically cutting Jasprit Bumrah for four off his 88th ball before Finch swept Jadeja to the boundary for a 15th ODI before stunned India were put out of their misery.

Iran plane downing: 'Several people detained' for shooting down airliner
State Department has warned Iranian authorities that Washington was not going to "tolerate" violence against the protesters. Iran's Foreign Ministry, rather than the judiciary, would be responsible for any decision to expel him.

The left-hander was powerful all around the ground, drastically upping the scoring rate from a World Cup a year ago where he also hit three centuries.

KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan added 121 off 136 for the second wicket.

During the first ODI of the ongoing Australia's tour of India in Mumbai, India opening batsman Lokesh Rahul was made the incumbent wicket-keeper after regular glovesman Rishabh Pant was hit on the helmet in the first innings.

Pat Cummins was brought back from the other end to send Dhawan back to the pavilion after flicking the ball to cover where Agar took the catch.

Kane Richardson also finished with 2-43 from 9.1 overs after being picked ahead of Josh Hazlewood.

Following the results of this year's selection, the United Kingdom academy announced it would be reviewing its voting process. Instead, Erivo saved the Academy from the embarrassment of yet another slate of all-white acting nominees - but just barely.

A short ball from Cummins hurried onto Pant who went for a pull and got a top edge onto the helmet, the ball lobbing towards point.

Number 10 batsman Kuldeep Yadav made a useful 17 to take India's score past 250 before being run out by a direct throw from Steve Smith.

Dhawan also said where Kohli batted was "the captain's choice" and that the team had been doing well of late, which didn't give them a reason to worry yet. In phases, we were too respectful against their bowlers, and didn't take the game by the scruff of the neck.

And it came with the next World Cup to be played on the sub-continent, where the Aussies have now won their last nine ODIs and have two more to play in this three-game series.
