Despite calls from USA president Donald Trump to break away from the deal, which is aimed at preventing Iran from getting atomic weapons, the European Union remains committed to the treaty amid an escalation of tensions in the region.

"There is no doubt that there were a series of imminent attacks that were being plotted by Qassem Soleimani", Pompeo said in a Fox News interview that aired on Thursday.

Iran's United Nations ambassador said Friday the Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops were primarily selected for this week's missile strikes to demonstrate target accuracy, not to kill Americans, disputing public claims made by top Trump administration officials.

He stated he believed four embassies were being targeted, including the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The US has been at loggerheads with Iran, a fierce regional rival of American allies Israel and Saudi Arabia, for decades. "We must keep the American people safe -- the House will pass a war powers resolution to limit the president's military actions regarding Iran", Pelosi said.

Trump said the United States also carried out the strike over a missile attack on a US military base in Iraq by a Iran-backed militia in December that killed a USA contractor. "It was very clear Qasem Soleimani himself was plotting a broad, large scale attack against American interests". Blaming the US decision to withdraw, Le Drian said Iran could get access to atomic weapons within "one or two years" if the deal continues to lose its substance.

In addition to this planned takedown effort, the US was also reportedly targeting a high-ranking commander in Iran's Islamic Republican Guard Corps in Yemen. No one was injured.

Tehran had been gradually breaching aspects of the deal since President Donald Trump walked away from the Vienna deal in 2018 and imposed crippling economic sanctions.

In a statement on the sanctions, Trump referenced Iran's nuclear program and use of proxy forces throughout the region.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin brief reporters about additional sanctions placed on Iran, at the White House, Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, in Washington.

Adnan Mazarei, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said the sanctions will hurt an Iranian economy that was forced to cut fuel subsidies earlier this year, triggering nationwide protests, but they also will make it harder for government to negotiate with the U.S. "And there's no question, by cutting off the economics to the region, we are having an impact".
