One person has died from a mysterious pneumonia outbreak in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, health authorities said on Saturday.

Tentative diagnosis showed 41 people suffering from pneumonia caused by a preliminarily determined new type of coronavirus, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said in a statement.

The rest were in stable condition, among which two have been discharged from the hospital, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Furthermore, there have been no related fatalities reported and there is no evidence of transmission from person to person or any signs of illness among medical and nursing staff.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that range in severity from the common cold to SARS, according to the World Health Organization. They reminded some experts of the emergence of SARS in 2003, when the virus spread from China to Hong Kong and then on to Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, and Toronto, Canada, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing almost 800.

Prof Yuen warned that Hong Kong must continue to stay vigilant and that the tests now used by health authorities in the city were effective in screening suspected patients.

According to information from the Chinese officials, investigation, epidemiological investigations revealed that the patients are mainly business operators at a market called "Hua Nan Seafood Wholesale Market" in Wuhan, which has been closed since January 1.

As of Wednesday evening, the new coronavirus had been detected in 15 of those cases, CCTV reported.

Some cause less-severe disease, some more severe. More than 8,000 people were sickened and almost 800 died, but no cases have been reported since 2004.
