Citizenship bill protest: Cops use tear gas, lathicharge Jamia students

42 Jamia Millia Islamia students detained briefly during anti-CAB protest

On Friday, the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAB) took a communal turn in Delhi after "students" of the controversial Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University resorted to mob violence against the police officials and shouted Islamic slogans "Allah-o-Akbar" during their protests. Several students have been stuck inside library and reading room.

They alleged that the mosque inside the campus was also vandalised as they threw tear gas inside it. Pictures shared by the students showed broke glasses inside the mosque.

Jamia's chief proctor claimed the police later forcibly entered the campus as no permission had been taken and both staff and students were beaten up.

Later in the evening, the Delhi police entered the Jamia campus and blocked the gates to nab some "outsiders" who had entered the premises to hide. "We want the police to leave the campus as soon as possible".

Escorted by police, some youths could be seen coming out of their hostels with their hands raised.
