Aung San Suu Kyi Slammed For 'Silence' Over Myanmar Genocide Claims

The Gambia, the Muslim-majority African country that took Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi to global court over genocide allegations, is slamming the leader for her silence toward the victims of the atrocity. "In the alternative (the court should) reject the request for provisional measures submitted by the Gambia".

In her speech at ICJ that lasted about 30 minutes, Suu Kyi alleged the situation in Rakhine state was "complex" while admitting the Rohingya minority was "suffering" when many of them had to flee to safety in neighboring Bangladesh.

At home however, Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar's founding father Aung San, is still revered by many.

"The Court and worldwide community should move swiftly to protect Rohingya and prevent further atrocities".

Gambia's attorney Abubacarr Marie Tambadou maintained there was evidence of genocidal acts against the Rohingya, adding that the case is now "in the hands of the court".

The lawyer said Suu Kyi had also failed to deny the conclusions of a 2018 United Nations investigation which found that genocide had been committed in Myanmar against the Rohingya.

A decision on the measures could take months, while a final ruling if the ICJ decides to take on the full case could take years.
