According to BBC, the survey taken at United Kingdom polling stations suggests the Tories will get 368 MPs - 50 more than at the 2017 election - when all the results have been counted. Prime Minister Boris Johnson could pass his Brexit deal now.

"I think Brexit has dominated, it has dominated everything by the looks of it", said Labour economy spokesman John McDonnell.

The Liberal Democrats are predicted to win just 13 seats - the same number as they got in 2017 and that would nearly certainly mean the departure of the former Labour and Conservative MPs who defected to them over the last few months.

Current Home Secretary Priti Patel has told the BBC that she takes the exit poll as "a prediction" however if correct she says that the Conservatives will be in a position to "get on with Brexit and end this paralysis".

Among the other parties, the Scottish National Party looked set to gain 20 seats to take 55 of Scotland's 59 seats, giving further impetus to leader Nicola Sturgeon's desire to call a second independence referendum.

She added: "We will not hang around obviously". It's fantastic. It's looking like the largest majority we've had since the 80s'. It has been predominately the Brexit election - but it's also been the climate election.

Shadow worldwide trade secretary Barry Gardiner said it represented a "devastating result for us" and "all the people who were really needing a Labour victory to improve their lives".

Many of the Labour Party's difficulties in this election appear to have been unavoidable.

"The bigger the Tory majority of course the less influence over this the ERG and Eurosceptics will have", said hardline Brexiteer Nigel Farage, whose anti-EU campaigning played a major part in persuading former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron to call the 2016 referendum.

The pound surged 2% after the exit poll of the United Kingdom election was released.

Almost half a century after Britain joined the EU, Johnson must now strike new worldwide trade deals, preserving London's position as a top global financial capital and keeping the United Kingdom together.

"This historic election gives us now the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people, to change this country for the better and to unleash its potential. We have put public ownership, a green industrial revolution, an end to austerity centre stage and introduced new ideas, such as plans for free broadband and free personal care".

With Labour split and unclear on Brexit, the strongly anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats had hoped to do well but they won only 11 seats, a crushing result.

"Jeremy Corbyn might have been bright, shiny and new in 2017, but by 2019, I think people have really got the measure of him and you're also seeing that come through tonight".
