US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi speaks about the impeachment inquiry of US President Donald Trump at the US Capitol in Washington DC

Pelosi OKs drafting of Trump impeachment articles: ‘Our democracy is what is at stake’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will draft articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump for abusing his office in a "profound violation" of the public trust.

Kildee said he supports Pelosi's decision to move forward on impeachment because he's concerned by a few elements like Trump's Ukraine requests and his apparent attempt to "obstruct" their investigation.

Pelosi, in a brief but dramatic statement, contended that the Republican U.S. leader had defied the norms of presidential conduct, violating his sworn obligation to uphold the U.S. Constitution by asking Ukraine to launch an investigation of one of his chief 2020 Democratic challengers, former Vice President Joe Biden, to help him as he runs for re-election.

"The facts are uncontested". "The president leaves us no choice but to act".

She said she was authorising the drafting of articles of impeachment "sadly but with confidence and humility".

"Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders and a heart full of love for America, today I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment", she said.

Another report found emails which revealed the oil company's consulting firm leveraged Hunter Biden to get a meeting with the U.S. The endorsement serves as a major vote of confidence in Biden from a respected party figure.

Trump lambastes the impeachment probe daily and proclaims his innocence of any wrongdoing at length, but he has declined to testify before House hearings or answer questions in writing.

The announcement puts Trump on track to become the third president to be impeached in USA history.

Pelosi delivered the historic announcement in solemn tones, drawing on the Constitution and the Founding Fathers, as Democrats push toward a vote, possibly before Christmas. Her announcement Thursday may aid the schedule. He said he wanted to get on to a "fair trial" in the Senate.

Democrats in the House say the inquiry is a duty.

Democrats are focusing on Trump's actions in dealing with Ukraine.

Drafting articles of impeachment is a milestone moment, only the fourth time in US history Congress has tried to remove a president, and it intensifies the deeply partisan undertaking that is consuming Washington and dividing the nation.

They allege the president withheld nearly $400 million (€360 million) in security assistance to pressure the government there into announcing an investigation involving former Vice President Joe Biden to benefit Trump's 2020 re-election campaign.

Pelosi was speaking a day after the House Judiciary Committee began considering potential charges against Trump.

A fourth expert called by Republicans warned against rushing the process, arguing this would be the shortest of impeachment proceedings, with the "thinnest" record of evidence in modern times, setting a worrisome standard. The House Intelligence Committee and Judiciary Committee have heard testimony for weeks as the probe into Trump has continued.

Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have been urged to remain in Washington this weekend to prepare for what officials familiar say are plans for a next hearing, to be set for either Monday or Tuesday.

Once an outsider to the GOP, Trump now has Republicans' unwavering support. But, he'll wait to see what's in the articles of impeachment before deciding how to vote.
