Turkey says no change in objection to NATO plan on Baltics

While Western leaders were alarmed that Turkish opposition could derail efforts to deter Russian Federation in eastern Europe, they said there was no chance of siding with Turkey against the forces who spearheaded the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg appeared dismissive of the whole matter, saying that NATO's entire alliance will respond militarily to any attacks of the Baltic countries.

The security alliance has recently been criticized by French President Emmanuel Macron, calling it "brain death, quot; due to the lack of strategic cooperation among members".

"With joy, we will come together and have talks on this issue", Erdogan said at a press conference in Ankara before boarding the plane.

Erdogan said unless his condition is met, Turkey will continue to obstruct NATO's deployment plans in the Baltic and Poland.

Merkel said she was "relatively optimistic" after the meeting, but Macron warned that "not all clarifications were obtained and not all ambiguities were resolved".

Also on Wednesday, Trump and Stoltenberg touted a defense spending increase of a combined $130 billion by the European allies and Canada since 2016.

Only nine of NATO's 29 members have reached the target agreed at its 2014 summit to spend two per cent of their GDP on defence before 2024. "So we have to address the rise of China together and I look forward to the allies' doing that at this leaders' meeting for the first time".
