3 reasons Chris Petersen is not done coaching

Former North Central and EWU player Jimmy Lake has been elevated to the head coach position at the University of Washington after Chris Petersen stepped down on Monday

Chris Petersen steps down as Washington coach after six seasons

The top talent in this class is crucial to the Huskies next season, and while some of them have been vocal on Twitter about Petersen leaving, none of them seemed to indicate that they're wavering in their decisions (yet, at least).

Then Washington will be turned over to defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, who is being promoted and tasked with continuing the Huskies run of success over the past six seasons.

The University of Washington shocked the college football world Monday with the announcement that head coach Chris Petersen will step down from his position following the team's bowl game.

Washington finished the regular season with a 31-13 win over Washington State. He left after only one season and eventually wound up on Petersen's staff at Boise State as a defensive backs coach. I will be a Husky for life, but now it's the right time for me to get away from my duties as head coach and recharge.

The school said Petersen, 55, will move into a "leadership advisory role" within the athletic department.

After a historically wonderful run at Boise State - going 92-12 with five conference championships and four top ten finishes in his eight years, he took over a Washington program that lost Steve Sarkisian to USC, remodeled and reworked it a bit, and then ... boom. He has been the school's Defensive Coordinator the past two seasons. "I will always be grateful, honored and humble for having had the opportunity to train our excellent youth in Montlake during the last six seasons". He also spent time with Petersen at Boise State from 2006-11.

The 42-year-old Lake drew interest from Colorado during CU's coaching search last year, but opted to stay at Washington with Petersen. Petersen will coach the Huskies in the bowl game, his final game in charge of the program he helped grow back into national prominence.

Overall, Petersen has a career head-coaching record of 146-38. When Don James walked away as Huskies coach in 1993, it was because the coach felt hung out to dry by the athletic director and university leaders.

But Lake immediately went into coaching, serving as a graduate assistant for EWU before coaching defensive backs (DBs) in Cheney from 2000-03.

"I could not be more excited about taking over as head football coach at the University of Washington", said Jimmy Lake. It beat Southern Miss in the 2015 Heart of Dallas, but lost to Alabama in the CFP, dropped the 2017 Fiesta to Penn State, and lost the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

Fans also stormed the basketball court at Auburn Arena after an upset of Kentucky in 2016. Lake was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2018.
